Here’s a story of a Dota 2 player who started when he was eight years old and pushed through long Finnish winters playing the game so well that it earned him enough fame and money to retire in his early twenties.
Who is Topson?
Topias Miikka “Topson” Taavitsainen is one of the best Dota 2 mid laners from Finland. Throughout his short pro career, he managed to win two consecutive TIs with OG alongside N0tail, Ceb, ana, and JerAx.
He was a culinary major when he decided to try his chances with Dota 2 streaming. After playing for ten to twelve hours a day, Topson received a DM from JerAx that invited him to join OG so they could try their chances on 2018 The International, which they eventually won.
His signature heroes include Monkey King, Invoker, and Pugna, which he best utilizes on Mid.
Today, Topson is an inactive player on the OG team and spends most of his time with his wife and child.
How Did Topson Become Famous?
Topson’s path to fame wasn’t that long. You could say that he became super famous worldwide in 2018 when he played and won his first major tournament in his life–The International.
However, that’s not to say that Topson didn’t practice Dota 2 long before he stepped on the biggest Dota 2 stage. He started his career streaming on Twitch for fun under the nickname Topsonous. He liked games like Dota since he was a kid and developed crucial skills in his teen years.
That’s why he dropped out of his last year of school and started experimenting with long Dota 2 streams on Twitch in 2017.
His channel grew rapidly as he soon started dominating European servers. That’s why he was hoping to get an invitation from top eSports teams in the Dota 2 scene.
However, months passed, and Topson didn’t receive any pro invitations until one day, JerAx from OG DM-ed him asking if he was willing to join the OG team since two spots opened.
He knew who these guys were and gladly accepted the invitation. As he stated, he didn’t have much to lose, though he could gain everything. A sound decision, to say the least.
OG started qualifying for 2018 TI with the refreshed team, and it was confident that Topson is the right player for Mid.
He felt more and more comfortable within the team as OG’s crew walked on the TI stage without any pressure or goals but to have fun.
That’s when Topson made his colossal breakthrough. He never played professionally in any major tournament, and he just showed up, stormed, and won the biggest of them all.
Topson likes to point out that he and the team were enjoying the process along the way. In fact, he said that OG’s crew had a laid-back approach, and the atmosphere was like a kind of gamer family.
Although he became highly successful and famous in 2018, many thought it was solely luck. However, Topson and the OG crew proved them wrong after winning the second TI title the following year.
Topson Debut Teams
We could say that Topson’s true beginnings are his streams. Thanks to many views and his successful stream sessions, he generated some interest from SFTe-sports and 5 Anchors No Captain teams.
After spending six months in total with those two pro teams, OG contacted him to play with them for the 2018 TI. In other words, Topson is one of the rarest pro players who got into a top team and won the top international event in one year!
Topson Streaming
Topson created a Twitch account on April 17th, 2017, under the name Topsonous. He began streaming ten to twelve hours a day as he dropped out of school.
After dominating his opponents for many months, he was approached by OG when he started competing in offline tournaments.
Since he won two TIs, he is now an inactive OG player and streams six hours every weekday plus Saturdays. He has around 12,000 viewers on average, and the highest number of viewers he has ever had so far was 20,000.
Topson has around 400 active subscribers per month, and it is estimated he earns between $600 and $1,000 per month from subscriptions.

Topson Relationship
Given that Topson has many brothers and sisters that already have established families, he always wanted to have a family of his own.
After winning two TIs, he traveled to Malaysia, where he met his future wife, Mawar Remy Taavitsainen. Mawar Remy is a Malaysian influencer, Instagram model, and ADHD advocate living with Topson in Oulu, Finland, and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
They’ve been together for years now and have a baby girl. Getting a child drastically changed Topson’s schedule, so he opted to stream more from home rather than touring around with pro teams.
Topson Statistics
Topson is one of the few elite players, like his colleagues from OG, that can show off with two consecutive TI titles.
As he jumped straight into big tournaments with some of the big guns, he didn’t waste time playing minor leagues throughout his career. He managed to snatch more than a few first and second places in some of the biggest Dota 2 tournaments.
Of course, aside from the unprecedented TIs, Topson earned multiple second places with OG in 2020, including:
- OMEGA League: Europe Immortal Division
- EPIC League Season 2 Division 1
- OGA Dota PIT Season 4: Europe/CIS
In 2021, his career slowed down. He earned fourth place in ESL One Summer 2021 and 8th in The International.
He’s currently an inactive OG player yet still remains on their roster.
Topson Personal Info
Topson was born in a large family with many brothers and sisters. As he was a middle child, he needed to learn how to fight for his place in the (rare Finnish) sun. Although we can’t add that being a middle child influenced his Middle Lane preference, we can indeed claim that he learned how to fight for attention.
His older brothers taught him how to play the Dota Warcraft 3 mod when he was only eight years old. As he grew older, he quickly became better than his brothers and soon enough became the best out of his friends.
Given that he lived in the northernmost city of Finland, Oulu, winters were extremely cold, long, and harsh. Given that situation, he spent most of his time playing Dota 2.
Topson’s interest in the game peaked when he went to culinary high school. He decided to abandon his final year of school and try playing Dota 2 professionally.
When he told his parents he was planning a professional gaming career, they were extremely skeptical. However, his brother offered him to live at his place until he achieved some initial results.
After he won the two TIs, there was no doubt that Topson made the right choice.
Topson always likes to point out how his unusual aggressive game style came from his childhood need to fight for the spotlight with his siblings.
He is also characterized to be a player with the most deaths and kills in the TI championship, and Topson jokes that that’s a perfect parallel to his harsh childhood.
After he won the two consecutive TIs, he wanted to have a family of his own, similar to his older siblings.
As Topson wasn’t a fan of cross skiing during winter in Finland, he traveled to warmer countries, like Malaysia. That’s where he found his wife, Mawar Remy, with whom he now has one daughter.
Today, he mainly streams to spend more time with his family, although he is still on the OG’s roster. There have been rumors that Topson is joining Team Liquid, however, which could be exciting.
Topson Net Worth and Finances
Thanks to his short but explosive Dota 2 career, Topson has earned approximately 5.5 million dollars. This doesn’t necessarily put him up there with the likes of Faker, but that revenue is still nothing to scoff at.
This is tournament prize money only. The number is presumably way higher when you add tons of sponsorship and other Dota 2-related events he participated in.
