Who is ZywOo?

Mathieu “ZywOo” Herbaut is a French professional CS:GO player, currently playing for Vitality. He plays as an AWPer for his team. ZywOo is a phenomenal young player with an amazing personality, and one of the first things that come to mind when talking about him is: “I don’t know…” (watch his interview from London 2018 Major Showmatch where he had a talk with one of the casters).

His humor is a huge part of his personality, making ZywOo fan-friendly. Every organization wants a player like him not just because of his skills (which he unquestionably has) but because such players are crucial for building solid team chemistry, which sometimes can make all the difference.

His story started at the age of 7 when he began playing CS:GO with his older brother but was only allowed to play for a couple of hours per day by his mother. After becoming a teenager, he still never “played in the middle of the night” or “did 4-5 hour sessions”. His mother encouraged him to get into video games, and from time to time, even played with him.

How Did ZywOo Get Famous?

First of all, ZywOo was born on the exact day of CS:GO’s commercial release. This inspired the nickname of ‘The Chosen One’.

ZywOo has enjoyed a rise to prominence in the last two years, but his first notable performances emerged in early 2017 when he became a regular presence in the French sub-top, first with E-Corp and then with WySix.

His prime spot in the world rankings was in 2019, where ZywOo was the best-ranked player in the world. This is an astonishing achievement considering 2019 was his first year competing at the highest level of Counter-Strike competition.

His enthusiasm and positivity are attributes that every team wants. This may be the reason why ZwyOo signed a contract extension (2024) with Team Vitality, making it one of the longest signings in esports history.

ZywOo’s Debut in Team Vitality

The long-awaited transition to pro finally happened in October 2018, when ZywOo was unveiled by Vitality, one of the biggest French esports organizations. The weight of expectations did not faze the then-18-year-old, who powered Vitality to victory at his first international LAN, DreamHack Open Atlanta 2018. He boasted a 1.40 rating as the team beat one of the best eSports teams at the time, including Complexity, Ghost and Luminosity.

It would have been difficult to imagine a better year than the one he had in 2019. After a slow start, ZywOo picked up the pace and began to showcase his talent at the major events. He scooped five MVP medals and was a beacon of consistency in Vitality’s unpredictable year, topping the charts for the rating of 1.30, including a big-event playoff rating of 1.33.

The Frenchman is an important part of Vitality’s climb to the top of the HLTV World Rankings at the end of 2020. Vitality was the dominant force in the BLAST Premier Fall Series and won the IEM XV Beijing event.

Back-to-Back MVP

ZywOo individually notched the highest player rating in 2020, tied with the 2018 Player of the Year winner and 2019/2020 runner-up Aleksandr Kostyliev (we know him as s1mple). With more trophies in his gallery and MVP awards to his name over the years, ZywOo also won this year’s honors.

“To receive this honor two years in a row really feels like a dream, especially after a challenging year, as we needed to adapt to playing online”, ZywOo said in his statement. “Playing Counter-Strike is all I’ve ever wanted to do, and to have this recognition so early on in my career is honestly unbelievable. I’m really grateful to all of my teammates and the Vitality organization for making me look great, and I hope to continue making them proud in the future.”
